I would like to volunteer and help children in a poor country. What would be my best choice? There are many poor countries, true, and I have thought about going to Cambodia? Has anyone been there who can tell me what's it's like?

there are so many countries to go to, and all have different needs... I have had friends go to Cambodia, and they have said, its in dire need of volunteers to help the children. But at the same time, when I was in Zambia, and Malawi, I found just as many children needing my help.

Of course the cities are where most people want to go to, but the moment you take a beaten off road, into the rural area's of Africa, you will be shocked at the poverty too. When in Zambia, I was in a small rural village on the Lake Zambezi, the children were starved for food love and acceptance. The best answer for you, is to go where your heart tells you to go...

Just remember that where ever you are going to go, it will not be easy on you. Your body will take strain, and you will need to support of your friends and family back home, and I mean more emotional support than financial support. Helping out with children is a difficult road, but a very rewarding one, if you can put your whole heart in it, and you enjoy working with children.

I read a book of one woman, Gladys Aylward, - she worked mainly in India, it might be something you would want to read and also Jackie Pulinger who worked in Honk Kong. Both of these woman, had a tough time with their volunteer work, but it will give you an insight into what you are getting yourself into.

Also, try not to always go for these big organizations... its sometimes better doing things with the smaller groups. I found it better doing it privately, you are not bound to the rules and regulations of the big organizations then, and can do as you feel is right to do. Although this is a more difficult route to take.

Which ever country you choose, good luck... and make sure you have the support of your friends and family... you will need it...

I say you stick right here and help out your own country ........you know the one where men and women are over fighting to protect people like you and I. I think that if you want some children to help then all you have to do is go to a larger town and walk the streets I am sure that you will use up all of your resource money and all of the time you have to spare there are tons of kids here that need help and aren't getting it .........in my opinion if everyone from here would help more here our country wouldn't be in the shape it's in......poor country?????? have you not heard of the debt we have here??????? I mean come on!

You can go to many countries and do volunteer work. For instance. I am in the Dominican Republic; and since I became disappointed with many organizations to which I donated for years, I started my own international organization, and work not only with children but entire families.

If you want to find volunteer opportunities, you can go to Volunteer Match. It's free. There are many great opportunities for you to help needy children anywhere in the world. Look at the links below. Mine is the bottom most of them.

Go to an Indian Reservation. Go to the inner cities.

Screw the rest of the world - stay at home and help some American children.

Are there no poor children in your own town? Own country? Or are you really just wanting to travel first, help kids second?

first try to do some thing in your country. then you can go to other country. your focus should be doing something not spending your time where you have to go.... so best of luck for our upcoming work.

If you live in the USA, I say to help out all of our abused, neglected, homeless, and starving children...Haven't we helped out others long enough? Time to bring that same help to our children...
