well french is the diplomatic language
mandarin is the trade language nowadays
so.. french or mandarin... coz they already are universal language in their respective field.

Well I think it would be Spanish, it has already become an international language ans it's taking more and more importance! Even in the US now you can speak Spanish almost everywhere. More and more people around the world learn Spanish and I think it's much more popular then French now.
