This website on worldwide crime statistics shows 60 countries ahead of us - either our crime rate doesn't make the graph, or, Australia evaded yet another "worldwide" survey.

Low and falling. About 300 murders in the whole of the country last year on a population of 20.2 million. That is fewer than one a day. Usual crimes are shop lifting, burglary, breaking into shops and stores, car theft, common assault (generally drunks involved) and petrol or gasoline station hold-ups though that has gone a bit quiet lately around here. More serious things like rape, arson, blackmail and murder are fairly rare though sexual assault as opposed to rape is more common.

Most forms of gambling are legal, taxed and controlled so there is not a lot of associated crime. There are no "dry" areas and Prohibition never existed so organised crime hardly ever got off the ground here. Prostitution is legal in defined areas.

Some extortion in the fruit and veg markets around Melbourne and one of the waterfront unions was highly corrupt 20 years ago. This was associated with tax fraud by some business types. But that is long ago.

Marijuana, heroin and cocaine are the source of a lot of the crime.

I'm from Venezuela, where over 15.000 murders (yes, the number's right) occurred last year in a country of 26 million. That's why I decided to move to Australia, with less that 300 murders a year. As`simple as that.
