Oh for goodness sakes - what answers you have got. I have just emigrated to Australia from UK (6 weeks ago). My cat also came with us (and we pick her up in 4 days). Basically you need to find a company that does pet transport. www.jets4pets.com is the one I used.
It takes about 2 weeks for the pet company to apply for an import visa for your pet. If your pet is never going back to the UK then you won't need a 'pet passport'. But if you do need for your cat to have an option to go back to the UK, then you need a pet passport which can take months to get - as the vet needs to ensure that the cat has enough rabies vaccine in the system - and that takes time and visits to the vets.
Once you have an import visa to Australia, the pet company can book your cat a flight. It cost me £1,200 for the whole thing (flight, vets fees for a medical 4 days before she flew, quarantine for 30 days). When she arrived in Australia she was put in quarantine at Eastern Creek in Sydney. You can visit your pet any day between 1:30 and 3:00, and they are really well cared for with a carer and ice packs if it gets too hot under their blankets.
Then 30 days later you can pick them up. No problem really...
Hope this helps.

I think Cats are prohibited imports. Australia doesn't accept fur products through customs. We have enough cats here of our own and they are always open season. Cats destroy our natural wildlife and as such are subject to strict laws. No cats are permitted to wander at night. Backyards have to be totally enclosed to prevent the escape of cats into adjacent properties or areas. Leave the cat behind and help us to maintain our wonderful wildlife without risk.
There are a number of private enterprises that sell cat fur hats. Also we have a large Asian population who are doing us a great favour in reducing the numbers of these damn pests. Cats are seen as vermin and rightly so!

Unfortunately the wildlife here really love the taste of cat. Really do advise leaving it where it is. Cats have a homing instinct and I would hate to see your moggy get wet as it tries to swim home.
