The only time you can do that is if there is a lien (you borrowed money to buy the car) on the title. Then in many states, the bank has the title and it has to be paid off before they will release the title to you. Dealerships will do this for you and pay off the car which will be included in your deal with the dealership. If you are selling the vehicle privately, you need the title. Either get a duplicate title if there is no lien, or pay off the vehicle to get the title. To get a duplicate title, you need to prove to your state that you are the owner of the car. A current registration or car insurance policy will help in most states. But check with your DMV to find out exactly what you need to prove ownership. Most states will NOT accept a copy of the title.

Afraid not. But it's fairly easy to get a duplicate title, and then you can. I'm assuming you're asking about a lost title. If you bought the car from someone and never got a title, that's a whole different story. In that case you would have to go back to the seller and demand a title.

No, you can't even junk it without a title. Get a duplicate title from your local DMV office.
