The rank of Lance Corporal in the Marines was first used in the 1830's in the Indian wars.

It was done way with in 1817 when the rank of private first class was approved for the marine corp.

In 1958 when the grades E-8 and E-9 were approved, the rank of Lance Corporal to be brought back.

Lance Corporal is above a private first class,and below a Corporal in the USMC. I did a little bit of research into this matter and although the info is sketchy, it seems that it came about around WWII.
