The Father (God)overcame her with his Holy Spirit. The angel Gabriel said to marry "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a Son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob(Israel)forever;his kingdom will never end" Mary asked him"How will this be since I am a virgin"Gabriel said "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the Holy one to be born will be called the Son of God". Muslems past did you not understand? In Genesis 1 v26 God said "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over all livestock, over all the earth, and all the creatures tht move along the ground" When God said Let us he was talking to his Son the Christ who is Jesus."In the beginning the word was with God, and the world was God. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us" Adam and Eve lost our relationship with God, Jesus came to restore which was lost. As Jesus said "I am the way truth and the light, no man comes to the Father except through me" How true that is, as we are all sinners.

"The Father (God)overcame her with his Holy Spirit"
"In the beginning the word was with God, and the world was God. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us"

...but i think you were asking Muslims.

They twist the Bible. That is why they say Ismael, and not Isaac, was laid on the altar by Abraham, why Ishmael is God's chosen son, why Jesus foretold of Muhammad and not the Holy Spirit, and why Gabriel was crucified as a look alike. Other Muslims say Jesus just passed out and then got up and went into India, others say Egypt. They have more twists than a coiled snake.

The Muslims above me have done a great job answering your question using the Quran, let me use the Bible to explain:

7I [DAVID]will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I BEGOTTEN thee. (Psalms 2:7)

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm%202:7%20;&version=9;

So does God have two sons? Explain this to the rest of us.

What are you implying when you say begotten? What did God do exactly? The verse you quoted doesn't really leave it to the imagination. Is this the word of God?

May the peace, blessings and mercy of God be Upon you

Yes we believe in the Virgin Mary, and the birth of the Prophet Jesus [Peace Be Upon Him] as a miracle. We do not say he was the Son of God however.

I will show the explanation,

Jesus was Created Without a Father

When Mary heard the good news that the angels conveyed from God, she said;

("O my Lord! How shall I have a son when no man has touched me.'')

Mary said, "How can I have a son while I did not marry, nor intend to marry, nor am I an indecent woman, may God forbid'' The angel conveyed to Mary, God's answer,

(So (it will be) for God creates what He wills.)

He is Mighty in power and nothing escapes His ability. God used the word `create' here instead of the word `does' as in the tale about Zakariyya [3:40], to eradicate any evil thought concerning Jesus. God next emphasized this fact when He said,

(When He has decreed something, He says to it only: "Be! ـ and it is.) meaning, what God wills, comes into existence instantly and without delay. In another Ayah, God said,

(And Our commandment is but one as the twinkling of an eye.) [54:50], meaning, "We only issue the command once, and it comes into existence instantly, as fast as, and faster than, a blink of the eye. ''

(48. And He will teach him the Book and Al-Hikmah, and the Tawrah and the Injil.) (49. And will make him a Messenger to the Children of Israel (saying): "I have come to you with a sign from your Lord, that I design for you out of clay, a figure like that of a bird, and breathe into it, and it becomes a bird by God's leave; and I heal the blind, and the leper, and I bring the dead to life by God's leave. And I inform you of what you eat, and what you store in your houses. Surely, therein is a sign for you, if you believe.'') (50. "(And I have come) confirming that which was before me of the Tawrah, and to make lawful to you part of what was forbidden to you, and I have come to you with a proof from your Lord. So have Taqwa of God and obey me.'') (51. "Truly, God is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him (Alone). This is the straight path.'')

The Similarities Between the Creation of Adam and the Creation of Jesus

God said,

(Verily, the likeness of Jesus before God) regarding God's ability, since He created him without a father,

(is the likeness of Adam), for God created Adam without a father or a mother. Rather,

(He created him from dust, then (He) said to him: "Be!'' and he was.)

Therefore, He Who created Adam without a father or a mother is able to create Jesus, as well, without a father. If the claim is made that Jesus is God's son because he was created without a father, then the same claim befits Adam even more. However, since such a claim regarding Adam is obviously false, then making the same claim about Jesus is even more false.

Furthermore, by mentioning these facts, God emphasizes His ability, by creating Adam without a male or female, Eve from a male without a female, and Jesus from a mother without a father, compared to His creating the rest of creation from male and female. This is why God said in Surah Mary,

(And We made him a sign for mankind) [19: 21].

God said in this Ayah,

((This is) the truth from your Lord, so be not of those who doubt.) meaning, this is the only true story about Jesus, and what is beyond truth save falsehood God next commands His Messenger to call those who defy the truth, regarding Jesus, to the Mubahalah (the curse).

Refuting the Claim that God has begotten a Son

This and the following Ayat refute the Christians, may God guide them, and their like among the Jews and the Arab idolators, who claimed that the angels are God's daughters. God refuted all of them in their claim that He had begotten a son. God said,

(Glory is to Him.)

meaning, He is holier and more perfect than such claim;

(Nay, to Him belongs all that is in the heavens and on earth,) meaning, the truth is not as the disbelievers claimed, rather, God's is the kingdom of the heavens and earth and whatever and whoever is in, on and between them. God is the Supreme Authority in the heavens and earth, and He is the Creator, Provider and Sustainer Who decides all the affairs of the creation as He wills. All creatures are God's servants and are owned by Him. Therefore, how could one of them be His son The son of any being is born out of two comparable beings. God has no equal or rival sharing His grace and greatness, so how can He have a son when He has no wife God said,

(He is the Originator of the heavens and the earth. How can He have children when He has no wife He created all things and He is the Knower of everything) (6:101).

(And they say: "The Most Gracious (God) has begotten a son (offspring or children).'' Indeed you have brought forth (said) a terrible evil thing. Whereby the heavens are almost torn, and the earth is split asunder, and the mountains fall in ruins. That they ascribe a son (or offspring or children) to the Most Gracious (God). But it is not suitable for (the majesty of) the Most Gracious (God) that He should beget a son (or offspring or children). There is none in the heavens and the earth but comes unto the Most Gracious (God) as a servant. Verily, He knows each one of them, and has counted them a full counting. And everyone of them will come to Him alone on the Day of Resurrection (without any helper, or protector or defender)) (19:88-95), and,

(Say: "He is God (the) One, God the Samad (the Self- Sufficent, upon whom all depend), He begets not, nor was He begotten, and there is none comparable to Him.'') (112).

In these Ayat, God stated that He is the Supreme Master Whom there is no equal or rival, everything and everyone was created by Him, so how can He have a son from among them This is why, in the Tafsir of this Ayah, Al-Bukhari recorded that Ibn `Abbas said that the Prophet said,

(God said, `The son of Adam has denied Me, and that is not his right. He has insulted Me, and that is not his right. As for the denial of Me, he claimed that I am unable to bring him back as he used to be (resurrect him). As for his insulting Me, he claimed that I have a son. All praise is due to Me, it is unbefitting that I should have a wife or a son.')

This Hadith was recorded by Al-Bukhari.

It is recorded in the Two Sahihs that the Messenger of God said,

(No one is more patient when hearing an insult than God. They attribute a son to Him, yet He still gives them sustenance and health.)

Peace Be With You

Who was his mother?

His mother was The Virgin Mariam (Mary) the daughter of Imran (father) and Hinnah (mother). When Hinnah carried Mariam in her womb she vowed to offer Mariam to God by letting her serve Him in one of His houses of worship. When Mariam was born her mother wrapped her in a piece of cloth, and took her to Al-Aqsa Mosque where she was handed over to the priests.

When the priests looked at her, and found out that she was the daughter of their lord and leader Imran they all wanted to take care of her. Although Zachariah the prophet (P.B.U.H.) was the person in charge of sacrificial offerings he was not allowed to take charge of Mariam’s matter this time. After a long quarrel over her, they all decided that the person who wins the lottery is the one that takes her in.

Zachariah won, and sponsored Mariam. He gave her a place to live, assigned her a female caretaker and personally watched over her until she was old enough to take care of herself and didn’t need the caretaker anymore.

When Zachariah came to Mariam in her place of worship he used to find fruits that would normally grow in other seasons. When he asked her where she acquired these fruits from, she would say that it was from God Almighty. The following verse relates the story of Mariam after she was born and offered by her mother to God:

"So her Lord accepted her with gracious acceptance and caused her to grow an excellent growth and made Zachariah her guardian. Whenever Zachariah visited her in the chamber, he found with her provisions. He said, ‘O Mary whence hast thou this?’ She replied, ‘It is from ALLAH.’ Surely ALLAH gives to whomsoever HE pleases without measure." (CH 3: Vr 37)

Angels used to always come to Mariam and tell her of her purity, and chastity. They also used tell her that God has chosen her above the women of the world, and that He has protected her from all types of corruption. She was constantly inspired to work harder and apply herself more in worship, supplication, and prostration for God. The Quran says, "And remember when the angels said, ‘ALLAH has chosen thee and purified thee and chosen thee above all women of the time. `O Mary, be obedient to thy Lord and prostrate thyself and worship the one God with those who worship HIM.’" (Ch 3: Vr 42-43)

How was Jesus born?

The following verses from the Chapter 19 (Mariam) narrate the story of the birth of Jesus Christ the prophet who was born without a father:

And relate the story of Mary as mentioned in the Book, when she withdrew from her people to an eastern place; And screened herself off from them. Then WE sent OUR angel to her and he appeared to her in the form of a well proportioned man. She said, "I seek refuge with the Gracious God from thee if indeed thou dost fear HIM."The angel said, "I am only a messenger of thy Lord, that I may give thee glad tidings of a righteous son." She said, "How can I have a son when no man has touched me, neither have I been unchaste?" The angel said, "Thus it shall be." But says thy Lord, "It is easy for ME; and WE shall do so that WE may make him a Sign unto men, and a mercy from US, and it is a thing decreed."

So she conceived him, and withdrew with him to a remote place. And the pains of child-birth drove her unto the trunk of a palm-tree. She said, "O, would that I had died before this and had become a thing quite forgotten!" Then the angel called her from beneath her, saying, "Grieve not. Thy Lord has placed a rivulet below thee; "And shake towards thyself the trunk of the palm-tree; it will drop upon thee fresh ripe dates; "So, eat and drink and cool thine eye. And if thou seest any man, say, ‘I have vowed a fast to the Gracious God; I will, therefore, not speak this day to any human being.’"

Then she brought him to her people, mounted. They said, "O Mary, surely, thou hast committed a monstrous thing! "O sister of Aaron, thy father was not a wicked man, nor was thy mother an unchaste woman!" Thereupon she pointed to him. They said, "How can we talk to one who is a child in the cradle?" Jesus said, "I am a servant of ALLAH. HE has given me the Book, and has made me a Prophet; And HE has made me blessed wheresoever I may be, and has enjoined upon me Prayer and almsgiving so long as I live; And HE has made me dutiful towards my mother, and has not made me arrogant and graceless; And peace was on me the day I was born, and peace will be on me the day I shall die, and the day I shall be raised up to life again." That was Jesus, son of Mary. This is a statement of the truth concerning which they entertain doubt.

This was the story behind Jesus’ birth. Two of the most magnificent miracles were connected to his birth: the first was the birth to a chaste mother, and without the need for a father. This miracle shows that God has the ability to do anything He wishes. God says after the above verse, "It does not befit the Majesty of ALLAH to take unto Himself a son. Holy is HE. When HE decrees a thing, HE says to it, ‘Be,’ and it comes into being.’" (Ch 19, Vr 35). The idea of Sonship is ambiguous. What does it mean for God to have a son when everything in this world is His creation, and a mere command of His?

The other miracle was that Jesus spoke when he was in the cradle. God gave him the ability to talk to people to fend off any accusations made to his virtuous mother, and to notify the world that he was a prophet of God. That was Jesus. He was sent to tell people about the true God. The One and only One God of this universe. It was people who then changed this idea, and took Jesus as the Son of God. The Quran relates, "said Jesus, ‘Surely, ALLAH is my Lord and your Lord, so worship HIM alone, this is the right path.’" (Ch 19: Vr 36).
