There are so many good ones with limited distribution, my recommendation is to look at the ingredients. There should be nothing but extra virgin olive oil, basil, garlic, parmesan cheese, pinenuts and salt.

If there is any soybean oil don't buy it. If it has garlic powder or dehydrated garlic, don't buy it. If there are walnuts instead of pinenuts, that's ok.

Also, some pestos have a lot of oil and others are more coarse. It is a matter of personal preference and the way you are going to use it that determines which type is better.

Pesto is so easy to make in a blender however, that you should seriously consider making it yourself from scratch.

Flora makes a great pesto sauce called Pesto Alla Genovese - it's hearty, but doesn't feel too heavy.

Another brand is Knorr - it's a powdered mix, but surprisingly tasty.

There's a "chunky" kind of pesto out here, but I can remember the exact name...it might be Classic pesto...it's in a circular container - sold next to tapenades (I bought it at Wegmans near the cheese section.)

I like "Progresso" Pesto Sauce. Not really expensive either.
