I'm guessing I need to go from the audio out of the cassette player to the audio in of my computer. Is there any program that will go straight to MP3 instead of me having to convert from WAV? I don't mind buying some software if it will save me some time.

I use Goldwave for simple audio recording and editing. You can output straight into lots of formats, including MP3.

Getting the levels right when you convert your old-school recordings is the tricky bit - it takes practise....

If you don't mind spending say 50 60 bucks or so, buy a creative zen nano plus mp3 player-use the direct line-in mp3 encoding system. plug the supplied line in cable the thinck end into your output of the cassette player, then the thin end in the mp3 player. run the mp3 encoding on the menu on the player and press play on your cassette player.
