Before you download Linux, you must know that Linux comes in a variety of distributions (See http://www.linux.org/dist/ ). You have to choose your favourite distribution and visit the developer's website. From there, you would know whether it's available for free and how to download it.

In my opinion, the best free Linux distro for new computers is Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/ ).

The best way of starting Linux is to get a Live CD - several of the distributions ("distros" or "flavors") provide Live CDs - these can be downloaded as huge ISO files which you burn to a CD. Alternatively you can buy (at small cost - $5-$8) a ready-made Live CD which you can run in your computer without affecting anything you currently have installed - it runs purely in the system RAM.

The best overall distro for beginners is PCLinuxOS:

To run any Linux live CD, just go into the BIOS at startup and make the CD/DVD drive the first thing to boot up in the boot order. Put in the disc and Linux will start up automatically...

Try Ubuntu. You can download it or order a free CD from http://www.ubuntu.com. You can run it as a live CD before electing to install it. If you would like to install it, its rather easy.
