We sleep for hours and yet when we dream, they don't seem long.

They don't seem long because they aren't. The thought process takes mere micro=seconds, and our being asleep makes no difference. A dream is a thought process, and they can take hundredths of seconds, or one can take seconds. How long does it take you to think about your nicest vacation, or date? THAT'S how long a dream takes!

Some dreams see longer than others. You have about five dreams a night, but some might be longer than others depending on how much sleep you get. You only remember about 2 dreams, but you might of had a really long one you just don't remember about because your subconcious mind forgot about it. That's why sometimes there will be a dream you feel that goes on forever, but other times the dream you remember is short. Short dreams actually take 5-9 hours they just seem alot shorter because of your subconcious mind. Weird, isn't it?

I like this question.

It seems that the human mind can get away with little rest, up to about 40 hours.

Then, you practically start living in a dreamy state, as the brain needs some rest. It's dream like images may insert themselves
into your everyday world.

I have had many dreams where I thought I had slept for 6-8 hours, only to find I had nodded off for less than an hour.

Which brings to mind Lucid Dreaming.

A friend told me about this.

But as to your Original question, I don't know.
It seems that time is a cognitive process, perhaps temporarily suspended by the machinations of the mind.

Sorry for raising more questions than answers, but this is a very good question.

You only dream for about 10% of the time you are asleep! Your mind has to get to a certain level of sleep where the dreams can happen! They don't seem long because they're not!

we don't dream the whole night long, we just dream when we are nearly wake up, that's why they don't seem long and it doesn't depend if the dream is a sweet one or not ~
