It's more common to be right handed than left handed and because cutting usually takes more skill than holding the piece still while cutting it people use the more skilled hand to cut, which is usually the right one. Maybe it also has something to do with how left handedness used to be considered abnormal and bad in the past (silly, I know). Left handed people were probably forced to do things the right handed way, which was considered to be the proper way.
I wouldn't worry about it too much. If you prefer holding the knife in your left hand and the fork in your right just go for it. I can't imagine that anyone would make a big deal out of that anymore.

Well the cutting done with the knife is the more precision job while holding the meat still with the fork is the less precision job. So if you're right handed, as roughly 90 percent of the population are, then it's more natural to do the cutting (knife) with the more dexterous (right) hand and hold the food item with the less precise (left) hand.
Of course if you are lefty then it would naturally be the other way around.

When somebody is trying to snatch your food while you are eating then you should protect your food. Hence you hold the knife in the right hand. What about the left handed people. I think they will hold the knife in the left hand only.
