Presumably, you mean a wide angle convertor for a camera with a non-interchangeable lens. So the first part of my answer has to be 'because there is no where else to put it'. Secondly, there is no 'must' about it. You only need to put it there if you wish to take photographs with a wider angle than available on the fixed lens on your camera - eg if that lens has a widest focal length of 35mm. a convertor may be available to extend that to 28mm or 24mm.

If you are referring to some kind of convertor for a lens on a DSLR, my advice would be not to use it, but to buy another lens with a wider focal length than that you already have.

That is the only place to put it since you are covering a wider angle and the lens has to 'process' that image to convey properly to the film plane or point of focus.
