Well in a way of not taking it all to litteral and living in fear of burning in hell.
So i mean you can have your own idea's about god and stuff instead of following a developed belief system, so you could have a normal human life with you expressing your belief by doing good, and no more then that.

I dont love God because I'm afraid of burning in Hell. I love him for helping me at a low point in my life. When I was in college I didnt even give God the time of day. I'm not sure if I was an Atheist or anything. I just didnt bother thinking about the matter. But one night I was binging bad from drugs and was having serious thoughts of ending it all. I looked at the TV and there was some religious show that said God was the answer. It sounded silly but I was at a desperate time in my life so I pleaded for him to help me. Sure enough the pain left my body. It was very convincing.
Now I'm no Bible thumper. As a matter of fact I dont know a whole lot about it but I'm learning. But I have cemented a spiritual connection with God thats very personal and my own.

People have done this on their own and eventually have adopted some wacky ideas and beliefs as they leave themselves without proper spiritual direction, the church has an awful lot of tradition behind it plus many learned teachers to guide us from going to far with wrong thinking,so I would not recommend anyone trying to go it alone,it can be very dangerous.
