Hi. Firstly i assume you are asking about the human spirit here and not the fleshly body.
If you are a true believer in Jesus Christ as the Son of God, you would have realized that you are a sinner and deserve punishment and that there is nothing you can do to save yourself OR contribute to your salvation.*1
And you would have REPENTED from your sin and TURNED away from sin to God, to Hear Listen AND OBEY Him.
ie. to live a holy life (sanctification)*2
So when a True Christian dies his soul is "With the Lord", awaiting the day of Christs return and the defeat of the Devil. After that all true believers will enter The Kingdom, "The New Jerusalem" and be in the presence of God and His Glory for eternity, Praising His Holy NAME forever.*3
If Not a Christian, his soul Will go to "Jail" to await punishment from the day that the Book of Life in Heaven is opened. They will be tormented for eternity full knowing why.
*1(Salvation is by GRACE thru FAITH in Jesus Christ ALONE. You are NOT saved by burning candles, helping the poor OR just going to a church. Good deeds are a RESULT from salvation and not the CAUSE of it. This is were the Roman Chatholic Church miss the whole thing)
*2(Sanctification (becoming holy) is some thing you must Do.
By reading the Bible, Prayer, Thanksgiving, Abstaining from evil and so on. But you cannot do this out of your own strength, you must pray for the Holy Spirrit to guide you.
Justification is what Jesus did on the cross. He took your sin and gave you His Righteousness (He makes you free from guilt and sin) so that you can be right with God (forgiven) )
*3(This is the Hope of Christianity: Eternal Life in the presence of the Holy God)

Nothing but decomposition happens in the grave. When a person dies, the soul leaves the body and gets into another heavenly body (theophany), the spirit goes back to God who gave it and the body goes to the grave. The souls goes into heaven or hades depending on whether one was redeemed or not. These souls will all be waiting for the judgement day after which the righteous will then come down from heaven to repossess the new earth.

The soul returns to God. As for the body in the grave - well, the overwhelming evidence is that it rots (dust to dust).
Take a look at the Nicene Creed which, as a Catholic, I say every week. That tells you what I believe happens after death. As to how it happens...that's a mystery. However, do bear in mind that God is beyond time, so that the concept of "a long time in the grave" does not apply. When you think about it, this concept does your head in. What it means is that God exists everywhere, instantaneously. It does begin to help us to understand why and how we can say that Jesus Christ is alive and with us now, because we believe that Jesus is the Son of God.
God bless, and keep asking questions!

NOTHING... When you are dead, you are dead. Gen 3:19 " In the sweat of your face you will eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken,. For dust you are, and to dust you will return." Eccl 9:5 "The living are conscious that they will die, but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all."
Isa 26:14, "They are dead; they will not live. Impotent in death, they will not rise up."
The concept of a soul living on long after the body has died is not scriptural...it is an apostate teaching perpetrated by the Greek philosophers e.g Socrates, Plato etc. which found its way into Christian doctrine. It downplays the promise of a resurrection, one of the pillars of true Christian faith. Why would you need to be resurrected if you have never really died after all..

The Bible tells us that when we die, we are dead, not living in some other ealm. (Ecclesiastes 9:5,10) However, it holds out the hope of a resurrection onto the Earth for those who have died. John chapter 11, Revelation 21:4 and other scriptures indicate this. This would not be necessary if we "lived on" after we died. Further information can be obtained at this web site.

Christians as far as I am aware do not have any believe in what happens in the grave - the body rots, its a fact, regardless of what religion. Or were you wanting to ask what they believe happens after death?

Well it's the longest dirt nap ever, the eternal sleep until the day of resurrection all the dead will rise, and soul and body shall meet again, but what is buried is only the shell so to speak that is left....your soul is no longer there.

Christians believe that the body is just a receptacle which carries your soul.At death the soul leaves the body, which is now useless. It is changed back into the ashes and dust from whence it came(same with cremation).

decompose same as every one else, the important things happen shortly after death,a body is a body whether dead or alive, but it is powered by something ,when this entity leaves the bodyi it go`s some where, most Christians hope they go to heaven, whether you are christian or not, most society's,believe in a similar path,Jews;Muslims Hindi ,Australian Aborigines, African tribes, every one has different names for a similar place.some individuals believe we just rot away, that is there prerogative.
