Well, I had bleached highlights for ages. Decided to get more of my natural shade which is sort of darkish blonde, ashy. Went to hairdressers and they put a semi-permanent colour, called dark blonde which looks way too dark for me! The colour is sort of with warm tones in it, which she said had to be put in before any ashy can go on.
I don't want it to be so dark. How long do you think it'll last and how soon will I be able to put ashy colour in? Will I be able to get light blonde?

I would appreciate people who have experience and hairdressers to answer this one - no offence but guessing isn't good enough! ;-)

My sister's a hairdresser so I know a little about colour. Because your hair had been highlighted previously, any semi-permanent colour put on afterwards will have more of a permanent effect.

The reason for this is that bleaching (lightening/highlighting) dries your hair out and makes it porous. When you add another colour each hair absorbs the colour further into its core than it should do meaning even semi-permanents are more permanent.

You could have your hair lightened again but bleaching it further where it has already been bleached is likely to damage it and cause snapping.

If you can afford it, your best bet would be to seek out an Aveda salon for your next colour. They use plant-based products and although they still might have to bleach it slightly to lighten it, they'll probably be able to do so more gently than a normal hairdressers.

Semi permanent shades last anywhere from 6-8 weeks depending on the frequency that you wash your hair. If you wash your hair every other day, that's about 24-28 shampoos. In some cases, the color doesn't come out completely, leaving some slight tones to the hair. The next time you have the color done, tell them you would like a medium neutral shade rather than a warmer dark. That should take care of the darkness in the future until your natural shade returns.

because you have previously had highlights, this has stripped your own colour out of your hair, therefore it has made the streaked bits more porous. The semi permanent colour will not wash out of the streaks so easily as bleached hair is drier and holds colour for longer. Eventually it will fade, the more you wash it, the more it will come out, but it will take longer. You could have highlights over it again, but your hair may suffer, so in my experience i would suggest be patient, or try a 'colour stripper' bought from chemists, and this should speed up the process of getting the dark colour out

semi permanent colours last from 6-8 week as you have had highlight it will last a bit longer if there bleach highlights about ten weeks when ever you go back to your natural colour atfer highlight it always seams a bit dark at first 4.it will fade every time you wash your hair.it wont be long be fore its back to normal warm tone fade out first. dont be tempted to do a home colour it will make it really hard to do anything with it if goes wrong.if all else fails go back and explain you hate your hair and they should change it.

It should last about 6 weeks. Not sure how long you have to wait till you put another colour in it I'm sure its a week though at least as you have to let the colour settle first. Also your hair will lighting every time you wash it with a semi in.

The color will lighten. Semi permanent last from 6-8 weeks. It can fade quickly. You canput a few highlitesclose to the color want to brighten it up also, and then color it again to the color you want. I died my hair once jet black, and my hairdresser put a few highlites in it and what a difference it made! Thank god, I didn't have to strip the color.
