Absolutely not, don't give up your power to your neighbor. They'll grin in sociopathic gratification as you're hauled away in a cop car for assault/battery with intent to cause great bodily harm/brandishing a firearm and possibly... attempted murder (if you have priors and the D.A. is having a bad day, lol).
1.) You could politely ask him to please turn it down.
2.) When that doesn't work, you call the cops (not 911, but the station directly). They'll come out and tell them to turn it down. On the 2nd incident, you call again and they'll warn your neighbor that they can be cited for disturbing the peace. (go to your city's website and look up the city ordinances on noise disturbances. Think like a lawyer and you'll get results.)
3.) If they become beligerent and threaten you or make threatening remarks or you have called so many times the cops know your address by heart... (go to your police station and make a report, and get a copy of the call records when you had to contact police due to excessive noise. then file a suit with the city attorney's office for harassment and/or an injunction to get them out of the neighborhood.)

No, that's called assault and battery with intent to do bodily harm, and where I live, you could get up to 20 years in the Penitentiary for it. The only time violence is justified is when you are defending yourself from being assaulted. You should grow up, and buy some good ear plugs, a bottle of Febreze, or move, but mostly just grow up. Sorry man, I call them as I see them.

To avoid getting arrested for assault and battery and use of a firearm, call the cops and tell them you have a complaint for disturbing the peace. Keep calling them and they will intervene and put a stop to it. Violence isn't the answer to a problem like this.

Or you could always call the cops and file a complaint.
Then you can watch and enjoy the show when they come to deal with it.
Bonus points if he has drugs to get arrested for having.

Would that be more polite than what he is doing? There are legal ways of handling problem neighbors.
And if you said that I smelled, I might play my music loud, too.

Did you try to simply ask him to turn the music down?
/may seem obvious but it's amazing how many people neglect to do this simple thing....
