Unless you come into contact with blood or body fluids, you're pretty safe. It's not airborne so being in the same room with them will not infect you. Don't worry. It's very noble of you to volunteer to help these people - not many others spend much thought or time helping these people.

Viruses are not able to enter the body through intact skin.
Therefore viruses must enter the body through an open wound(s) or one of a number of possible body openings. Most of these body openings contain mucous membranes. Mucous membranes are thin tissues which protect many openings and passages in the human body. These membranes secrete mucus. Which contains anti-germ chemicals and keeps the surrounding tissues moist. There are mucous membranes in the mouth, inside the eyelids, in the nose and air passages leading to the lungs, in the stomach, along the digestive tract, in the vagina, in the anus, and inside the "eye" of the penis. Many viruses, if placed on the surface of a mucous membrane, can travel through the membrane and enter the tiny blood vessels inside.

The chance of being infected just by *talking* to them is ZERO. If one of them bleeds on you, then there might be a chance, but I doubt you'll get bled on. lol
If you are scared then don't work there. You could go work in a nursing home or hospice for old people dying of cancer, etc and not have to work around people who you think are contagious.
Good Luck.

Aids itself can only contracted by sexual intercourse or direct exposure to the blood. the only disease you run a risk of contracting is TB ( tuberculosis ) which is the major killer of people with HIV. still, being infected by this disease is highly unlikely.

wear gloves or mask or whatever they tell you to..........talking to them won't give you aids, most volunteers don't deal with blood, Princess Diana was one of the few Royals to hug one, or even be concerned about them
