remaining calm can either defuse a situation, or escalate it, depending upon the other person's agenda...if it's verbal, and from a stranger, i don't even answer. most ppl don't mess with me. i'm nearly 6ft tall and very muscular w/ facial piercings...which i guess ppl find intimidating. if someone i know is being bitchy, i usually ask questions to find out what the deal is. if somebody has the foolish idea to physically hit me, they better back it on off quick, because i am not anybody's punching bag, and i will hit back with everything i've got.

I have never been hit below the belt, but if it ever happens, I know that I'm safe (I'm a girl). Pain or no, I can't see myself talking in a calm manner after a punch has been thrown at me. I would probably retaliate, or leave and go bake something. :)

Absolutely, as to answer in kind is lowering yourself to their level. Also, it isn't necessary to "buy into" their anger and inappropriate behaviour. I am assuming that when you use the term "hits you below the belt" that they have used some kind of insult or epithet that is meant to be damaging in it's use against you. I personally don't use others opinion of me to set how I see myself, and only believe in my own opinion of me. If someone doesn't like me, I believe that they have a problem, and just leave it at that.

Although it's hard to swallow, yes you are. Be even kinder to them. It is like "heeping hot coals upon their head"

They want you to react. They will quit eventually.
