there are 3 types of rear projection. the first guy only mentions one, as if thats the only one or thats the only one he knows of. the other two are lcd rear projection and crt projection. the lcd projection is simmilar to dlps in size, weight, depth, some say dlp give better picture, i say dlp has to many moving parts to fail. them theres crt the old big screens ,they have been around since the 70's, the technology has been perfected for over 30 years. and have a great picture. but small viewing angle , you cant get too far off to the side of tv or the picture will disapear. oh and the dlps he is raving about and the lcd rear projections use a lamp to project. like a light bulb. that blows like a light bulb. they last typically 5000 to 10000 hours. thats about 3-7 years. then you have to buy a new bulb(lamp they call em). that cost about 300 to $500 dollars. and try to install it your self or pay a technician to install it for you. then do the same thing again next time. i bet he didnt know that. and why didnt he?.

yes you pay less than a plasma or lcd flat panel , but the re occuring cost of lamps , really turns me off

- the good old crt projection is great though. if you dont mind the big bases and the viewing angle problem , iwould reccomend them.and they are really less expensive, id go with hitachi , ihave sold them for years and i believe they are a great product.

Listen, I don't know what folks have been telling you but after careful research, I bought a REAR projection TV. Toshiba, 62 inch HD etc, for 2000. I wouldn't have a plasma for anything. Too much trouble and worry. Get yourself a REAR projection tv, stay away from Hitachi, consumer reports has it on their do not buy list. If you don't go with the toshiba and you have a smaller place, then go get the samsung 50 inch Rear Projection, ( DLP ) It has a lovely picture and a very nice TV. I think it would be perfect for you and light enough not to worry about anything. Go to Best buy or circuit city. Best buys web site, www.bestbuy.com. They deliver and things are on sale now. There is every reason to go with the REAR Projection, ( DLP ) as they are called. You will be happy. It has a nice picture even without the HD hookup. Toshiba has a slightly smaller one too besides the 62 inch, it is a sister of the 62 in TV with a few more options. Consunmer reports even say Rear Projection tvs are the way to go, they say, more screen, for less green. --- ( money)! Good Luck. 50 samsung DLP rear projection for you, I think.
