Best defragmenter:
1. Perfect Disk 8 (Best!)
2. Disk Keeper 2007
3. Norton Speed Disk
4. Microsoft
Perfect Disk 8 is considered a standard for large network environments and IT Pros.
Disk Keeper 2007 looks really good and has some new features. A few IT people say it is better, but there was some bugs in the older version. So it is a wait and see on if it is really better the Perfect Disk 8.
You can down load and test them both. I would not recommend installing them both at the same time though, better to try one, uninstall and then try the other tool.
Speed Performance Optimization:
1. Scan and remove all viruses and spyware.
2. Run disk clean up and remove all old junk.
3. Remove / On install unnecessary programs.
4. Empty the trash can
5. Clean and Optimize registry.
6. Turn off any not need auto launch programs at startup.
7. Defrag - last thing.
- If you computer crashed or hung up a few times, then also run a complete Check Disk scan - check market : Auto fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.
Then you computer should be running better then before.

I've stopped worrying about which application I use or how often I have to defrag the disk since I started using Speedefrag.
This little bit of freeware restarts your computer and runs only the Windows defrag software, nothing else at all. This makes the defrag much faster because everything that is usually running on your PC hasn't been started. Once finished, you can tell it to shut down your PC.
Hence I run it last thing at night when I've finished with the PC, and when I restart it the next day, it's all finished. Fantastic.

having used both i can safely say there is no real noticable difference between the two programs in terms of performance. however windows defrag can only do a single drive or partition ata time, and the norton product does two at a time safely, and it will occasionaly attempt three drives ata time but this can crash the machine.
remember if you want to keep your drive running at peak performance your free space on C: should be not less that 20% of your total disk capacity of the C: drive.
it also helps to keep the windows registry clean and in perfect running order. see http://registry-clean.net and get a copy of that software, run it at least once a week, several times untill your system reports as clean or no problems.
you should also clean up your browser history files etc. which registry clean can do for you or use the browsers own cleaning utility.
finaly you need great malware defences. see www.lavasoft.com for adaware se Pro and also see www.trend-micro.com for pc-cillin 2007. trust me with all of that your system will be running perfectly.
Norton tends to be resource intensive and so uses a lot of CPU and RAM to run even in stand by.
Trend uses almost no resources in comparison. so your system can do what you need it to do without any problems.

Hello,
(ANS) Neither!! as they are both very poor at defragmenting the drive and its indexes. I highly recommend a program called "perfect disk" this does a MUCH better job than either of the software you mentioned. Perfect disk is faster too & is what IT professionals use.
