I have noticed a large amount of soldiers going AWOL in my NAVY career and was wondering when the recruiting process will change? 90% of my shipmates were mislead into joining and about 60% of them accept it and go on..but a lot of them would do anything to get out. Why must the government make it so hard for people to get out that have no will to be in the service. I feel that if someone doesn't want to be there why force them to stay in? I myself have been cheated and lied to by the NAVY..if they would tell the truth about the military to begin with it would save them millions of dollars that they spend on troops that go AWOL because they were lied to or mislead. What good is a "slave" soldier?

Just wanted to add that I'm not trying to get out. Just wanting to hear others opinions on so many AWOL or UA soldiers.

An article just came out in yahoo.news that the government has done away with the 2/4/6 year active duty enlistment plan. Now, any one that wants to join can evidently "quit" at any time and be transfered to the reserves. They say it's because too many current enlistments, mostly overseas in war, were "involuntarily extended" beyond their discharge dates, and there's a large dropout rate now. Didn't Sec. of Defense Gates say that the US needs another 92-94,000 new troops for the Army and Marines over the next two years?
I hate to say it, but I smell the coming of a draft!!!!
You are right about the AWOL rate. I had my 10-yrs in, but now morale is MUCH worst as it was during the 'Nam years. It's the same premise though. You're sent off to fight a war based on lies and with no way to win short of dropping nuclear weapons.

You sound bitter, Do your time and get out. As in any Military service you get what you put in.
As for AWOL rates etc. DOD and USA report below. Rates have actually dropped since 2001.
Desertion numbers have dropped since 9/11. The Army, Navy and Air Force reported 7,978 desertions in 2001, compared with 3,456 in 2005. The Marine Corps showed 1,603 Marines in desertion status in 2001. That had declined by 148 in 2005.
The desertion rate was much higher during the Vietnam era. The Army saw a high of 33,094 deserters in 1971 — 3.4% of the Army force. But there was a draft and the active-duty force was 2.7 million. This was due to a draft that forced more truly conciseness objectors into the military against their perceived will.
Desertions in 2005 represent 0.24% of the 1.4 million U.S. forces. Opposition to the war presents a small amount desertion and most are due to military personnel not adapting to military life.
According to the Center on Conscience and War, the number of objectors in 2005 was 23 Army, 3 Marines and 7 Navy
Taking these numbers into account the desertion rate is one-sixth that of the Vietnam War.

whilst i replaced into interior the army (1966 - 1969) it may well be counted on long the guy replaced into AWOL, an afternoon or 2 on no account bothered anybody yet something after that we've been for the reason that individual as being a deserter and traitor (bear in mind this replaced into for the period of Vietnam) and felt that execution replaced into warranted. One or 2 days the guy could have been inebriated or with some woman companionship. just to make sparkling, you're additionally AWOL in case you go away your base devoid of having go away papers so purely going downtown for the day devoid of suitable paperwork is likewise AWOL.
