Does it start at the speed limit sign, at some point beyond the sign, or where the sign becomes clearly visible?

If there is a risk of getting caught, I make sure that no part of my vehicle is speeding past the sign. If I can see the sign, I will let off the gas in an "obvious" effort to meet the next speed limit.

I've heard some crazy rules about your front and rear bumpers crossing the sign, so check the laws in your state.

If it is an increase in speed at or after the sign, a decrease in speed before reaching the sign.

It might differ from state to state, but in California, the new speed limit begins *at* the sign.

I would say at the sign...the very moment u see a new speed limit sign, means that is the speed limit u hafta follow..

The new speed limit commences at the speed limit sign although some juristictions have a tolerance of upto 50 metres. As a rule of thumb you should be doing the lower of either your current speed zone or the new speed zone, when you pass the spee restriction sign.

You should check with your local Department of Main Roads / Transport and/or DMV for local clarification as it can vary.

Meet the required speed limit as close as the sign as possible especcially if you are slowing down froma high speed zone.
