We have noticed over the last month that Bonnie, our 13 year old pavement special dog, can just hear our whistling only - no response to voice calls and usual noises like door bells ect. There are no signs of any infection to her ears. I presume that it is a natural thing following her old age. Is there anything that can be done to possibly help increase her hearing ability?

Hi!!
Have you taken your dog to get evaluated by a vet?

They can do tests: procedure referred to as brain auditory evoked response (BAER) testing, to check to see for sure if he is deaf.

I don't think that inner ear infections are a common enough cause of deafness to pursue this are hearing impaired but intermittent and/or very sudden onset deafness make your vet see the ear drum and evaluate the middle ear otoscopically.

Also some dogs with allergies that affect the middle ear and close off the eustachian tube are reported to have diminished hearing that improves with the use of corticosteroids or antihistamines to control the ear inflammation.
You'll need your vet !!

Consider training your dog to follow a scent track. This could help her find her way home or back to you when she can’t hear you calling : http://www.askedweb.com/askedweb/Training_The_Deaf_Dog/

Have the dog checked out by the vet to be certain she doesn't have a treatable ear problem.

Likely it's due to her age. Being able to hear high pitched sounds better than voice is fairly typical of age related hearing loss. Dogs adapt fairly well to hearing loss. If you want her attention, whistle or you can try stamping your foot. A totally deaf dog can pick up vibrations on the floor. Dogs can be trained to hand signals and that will make life easier for both of you.

Even with poor hearing she can have a good quality of life as long as her health holds out.

what is a pavement special dog? as for her hearing, take her to your vet. there may be something you can't see. a dog's ear canal take a 90 degree turn and you'll need your vet to check and tell you if there's a reason for it or if anything can be done. good luck.

She sounds like she is a sweet 'ol gal! It is probably her age but have her cheked by a vet..

Make her feel secure by touching her a lot and talking to her so she can see your mouth move...she will like to see you talk even if she cant hear you..

You are very lucky to have her with you - she is a lucky girl!
