Until Vatican II, communion wafers only were distributed at the Mass. It was after the many changes brought around by Vatican II in 1965 under Pope John XXIII, that wafers and wine both came back into fashion. I was a member of the Catholic Church at that time, and it was some of the other changes that drove me away.

From the beginning. In time, however, the practice began to be limited for practical purposes, such as cost and danger of spillage. About 40 years ago, permission was widened again.
