My two year old shih tzu just gave birth to 5 pups six days ago. Then my siblings discovered that her left eye is in the early stage of cataract. Is there an operation to cure that?

you need to have a veterinarian diagnose this first. but if it truely is a cataract yes there is a surgery that can be done. it can be costly but in a young dog such as her it could be well worth it. your vet can refer you to a veterinary opthamologist that can discuss the procedure and cost with you. i hope though now that she has developed a possible herriditory condition you will have her spayed since she can pass it on to her pups and let the new families that are waiting to take these pusp home when they are ready that the mother does have a catact. good luck.

What a pity you didn't have your dog health tested before breeding from her. You need to consult an eye specialist as to whether this type of cataract is hereditary. If it is, you will have to inform the buyers of your pups that the pups stand a good chance of inheriting the same condition. As to having an operation, I wouldn't rush to have it done. Dogs rely much more on their other senses and can manage much better than humans with limited sight. It is not a painful condition & many dogs live with cataract quite happily, particularly if it's only in one eye.

Yes, there is a surgery for it. According to my vet, there is also a new medication you can try for early stages of cataracts. Sadly, my dog's cataract was too advanced for the medication option (she was also old, which would make the surgery rough on her). For the surgery, you are looking at a cost of somewhere b/t 1,500-3,000 per eye....you will have to first visit your vet and then get referrals to an opthalmologic surgeon. Ask for more than 1 so that you can compare prices. I hope you are able to get the surgery done, otherwise the cataract will just continue to advance and it would be so sad to see her become blind at such a young age.

the most important downfall to possessing a Shih Tzu is the grooming. They require a variety of of brushing, a minimum of an hour an afternoon, in case you're making plans to maintain their finished coat. I own 4 of those astounding dogs. i in my opinion keep them at a "puppy cut back" simply by actual truth they have a low tolerance for prime temperatures and that i stay in Florida. examine out the american Shih Tzu club's website for more suitable assistance and a respected breeder on your section. Be very careful even as procuring a Shih Tzu, so that you recognize what the breed criteria are and seem for high quality on your puppy. There are too a lot of people obtainable who're breeding those astounding dogs, and many different small breeds in undemanding words for earnings and the widely used and health of the dogs conflict through.

I would much rather let the vet decide. Yes - cataracts in animals are treated much like that they are in humans .
