We are a married childless couple living in the U.S for 3-4 years on a J-1/J-2 visa. It is our understanding that we cannot adopt from our country of citizenship and bring the child to live with us in the U.S unless we acquire US citizenship or one of us lives with the child for 2 years in our country of citizenship. We were wondering if (U.S) domestic adoption is possible for us? And are there any adoption agencies who facilitate such situations.

Also, is there anyone out there who being on a non-immigrant visa has adopted a child in their home country? Were you successful in bringing your child to the U.S? We are desperate for a knowledgble answer. Thank you.

In most countries, only citizens can adopt a child but there are exceptions under the law when allowed by the Social Welfare Office.
