When it is someone you know, what characteristics would make you recommend (or NOT recommend) that person be allowed to adopt a school-aged child?

I'd consider whether or not they are responsible enough to take care of themselves and any children they may already have, whether there is any substance abuse, their financial position, whether they have any behavioural/emotional problems, whether they are ready for the changes in lifestyle that having a child would bring, and why they want to adopt the child. Are they willing to emotionally, physically and financially support this child. A school-aged child who is adopted may come with many unresolved issues of their own, depending on their circumstances. The child shouldn't have to deal with the issues of their adoptive parents as well. Its a massive change and sacrifice that i would have to be sure the person was completely ready for.

I would see how organized their home was and it was clean and every thing safe for a child. If they had other children, I would not recommend they adopt a school age child because of the jealousy issue and if the child coming in has any problems they may pass that on to the other child. They need to have patience and the ability to love unconditionally. I would also do a background check and call some of their employers and friends and family.

I would never say not to adopt a school age child as mentioned earlier.. that's wrong to deprive a child of a loving home and a family that they deserve!

Well I am adopted and I think you need to want to give that child everything in the world and to love them. A safe nurtering environment. think also having an understanding of what its like to be adopted is also good, because it is often fustrating when you try to explain something you feel and they don't understand it. Read up on adoption stories and the effects it has on children.
The worst parents are the worst parent for anyone, abusive, unloving, not nurtering etc.

When they are always worried about things. If they have some obsessive behavior like keeping things clean all the time. If they are too old to live to see them graduate.

Mostly if the person did not finish school and can't help with homework or has a learning disability themselves.

I would just ask myself, if I had a child would I trust these people to care of him/her? Don't make a recommendation if you don't feel that you know them well enough!

- Are they responsible? (If they're not responsible themselves, then they cannot set a good example, nor can they manage their own lives).

- Basic decision-making skills (is it in their best interest or the child's?)

- Do they exhibit common sense skills? <-- (this is a big one)

- Will they love the child as if it's one of their own flesh and blood?

- Can they multi-task? Parenting is doing a million things at once and not killing your children out of frustration.
