I have books that I use for class and I think it would be much easier to find information in them if I could scan them to a PDF or even Word Document that would allow me to search for key words. Does anyone know of any free software that would accomplish this?

Bottom line is that you need to use an OCR (optical character recognition) program with your scanner. There are numerous programs with varying features available at sites like www.tucows.com and www.downloads.com (and countless others).
