I just wanted information from someone who has owned both breeds. I have three miniature dachshunds, two females (ages 2 and 5) and a male (age 10 months). I am going to get a yorkie girl this weekend and have heard all kinds of horror stories about them, which has me worried. I have done my book research and realize although yorkies have common terrier traits each one has different personalities. The yorkie girl I am getting is on the calm side. I am just wondering if raising a yorkie is any less or more difficult/easy than a dachshund and what major differences should I expect.

I owned a Yorkie but never a Dachshund. I am a Vet Tech and have had plenty of contact with both breeds over the years.

Personally I would never ever own a Dachshund. I only met one I liked- a wire haired she was sweet. As for Yorkies we loved ours very much. She was a great dog. When my oldest was a baby my husband (much to my dismay) would put ":Maggie" in the crib with our daughter. He wouldn't leave them alone of course but "Maggie" was as gentle as can be. Briana would pull her by her face hairs and "Maggie" would look at my husband as to say "help". She never nipped or even thought of it. We were heartbroken when she died. I always joke that "Maggie" was a small dog that thought she was BIG.

I don't know what "horror" stories you have heard. The only problem that we had with "Maggie" was that she was slightly difficult to housetrain, that mainly had to do with her small size. Taking out frequently and crate training were key.

Almost any dog can be taught to get along with children, you have to start when they are a puppy. Do things that children may do-grab at them, pull their tail and ears (not real hard). Basically you are conditioning them to expect this. You can also show your 10 month old (by modeling their hand in yours) how to properly pet the puppy.

Also you will want to teach your new dog that you and your kids can take things from her whether it be food or toys. If she should growl or snap at someone make sure that you or whom ever takes it away whatever it is-you are establishing that you are alpha and the dog is at the "bottom" of the pack.

Another thing I tell all new puppy owners handle your dogs feet. I know that sounds strange but usually dogs only have their feet handled when they need their nails clipped and they freak out. "Playing" with their feet conditions them to this also.

Consider crate training your puppy. There's lots of good books and articles on the web about this.

Above all have fun with your new family member. I am sure that you will love your Yorkie.

Watch your new yorkie body language and give her loads of treats, cuddles and attention and soon you'll be the best of friends. But remember don't leave out your other doggie friends. And hey, about horror stories dogs can never be a horror to anyone. This only happens when they've been mistreated. Make sure your new dog is from a good family and visit her a couple times before you take her home. Every breed of dog is differnet and every dog is special so I can't really tell you what to expect. Yorkies may be easier or they may be more difficult than dachshunds but it really depends on the dog. Good luck! sauage dog crazy chick

my entire family has dachshunds, I have had a yorkie for 15 years. I can tell you this. A yorkie's temperment is a little stronger, they are more prone to bark and go and "attack" any other dog, it's the little man's complex. The dachshunds in my family are more loving, couch potato type, great personalities, where as my little Buster, wants to make sure everyone knows he's the king of the castle. He prefers to be "on guard", and does not tolerate other dogs or little children well. Training? maybe, but like I said, the breed is more "Napolean", than docile. Good luck

we've had dachshunds and still have yorkies..yorkies generally have a sweet doggy personality..more refined maybe, and not so friendly to everyone as dachshunds..her care depends on how young she is..up to around 10 mo. they can suffer from an ailment commonly referred to as 'sugar-shock'..you have to really keep an eye on them and start treating them as soon as you see any symptoms..i.e.,not eating, lying around..just ask your vet..otherwise, it's just basically like raising any other dog..good luck!!
