Well i would say that most people do get nervous or emotional cause they are not sure what the heck the nurse or the psychiarists is thinking. You know deep down you are always wondering if they are telling you it all. Plus it is a safe place to let those emotions out without them saying anything bad about it, so enjoy having a place where you can get emotional, and they except it with grace. Now for them not shaking your hand, well they all don't do that all of the time. A lot of them won't cause there are a lot of people like me, that don't like to be touched. So quit often depending on how my ocd is effecting me, i won't even think of shaking their hand if they put it out. They will get that look from me too, and i will let them know why. So don't take it personal if they don't always offer you a hand shake when you leave. That can be an invasion of your space and they really would reither not go there, at least with me.

first off more and more doctors don't shake your hand because it can spread germs from one hand to another i was also mad when this happened to me. next you come apart because you have found someone to talk to and let it out you are depressed and need help just don't let them fill you up with drugs try to reason out why you are sad take it out and kick it around a littlle look it right in the face and say now i will be in charge and go on to some thing else you can win if you are strong it sounds like you have had a tough life and i'm sorry that you did but you have the power to change things so just do it and git -r- done

We get emotional because we enter the room knowing that we are going to open up. We see them as caring professionals who are ready to help and we need the help and that makes it a beautiful human experience.
On the hand shake discuss it openly with the person they might give you a reasonable answer so, you don't have to wonder about it.

you get emotional because you let down some of the guard you have up around others. the doctor or counselor is there to help and not judge so you can be yourself...thats if you are comfortable with them.... some professionals do shake your hand. every one is different.

When you see a therapist you know that you are speaking from the heart. Your emotions are free. Now about the handshake thing. It may be they do not want to put themselves on a level of getting too close. They are there to help and sometimes feel that physical contact may make them feel too close to you.

Because you are in a place of emotional safety, and it's ok to let go there. It's a good thing to have SOME where you can go and let your hair down, so to speak.
