They have used canaries in coal mines to detect poisonous gas for years because birds are so susceptible to such.
Smoke will not necessary give your pets lung cancer but it will hurt their lungs enough that they will probably die an early death.
Take the cig outside.

Some of the chemicals in cigarette smoke cause cancer; but different animals react in different ways.
Rodents tend to suffer from sarcomas; humans from carcinomas. They are two different types of cancer. Lung cancer is a carcinoma.
It takes a long time and a lot of exposure to develop and most small animals just don't live that long.
Its more likely to cause breathing problems, especially for birds. And dogs get heart disease if their airway is restricted; dogs that are allowed to pull on their lead tend to end up with heart disease. Breathing in a lot of smoke over a long time could contribute to heart disease in a dog but we're not talking about the amount you'd get in a normal room from someone elses smoke.
If you smoke indoors and have pets or kids then just get an air purifier, or smoke in another room.

If you want to give your pet cancer, think of a better way rather than smoking.

MOST DEFINITELY ...

My father-in-law had a wonderful blue healer female ... at the time the entire family smoked ( five smokers living in one house) . Everybody would sit around and watch television together and the room would be full of smoke ....

the dog developed a cough .. and all tests concerning heart worm and kennel cough came back negative and the vet ended up diagnosing emphasemia (forgive spelling)... she ended up also with many tumours and she was a relatively young dog when she died from them..

they test the drugs that are in cigarettes on mice ( and other animals) to test the effects .. and yes cancer is one of them ..

:(

New studies prove that second hand smoke is not harmful as once believed. Since indoor air is so much more polluted than outdoor air, open a window. I smoke and I do this for this reason. None of my pets ever contracted cancer. Perhaps there is a genetic connection. Have a great year.

I dont know about cancer but it can certainly kill them. I had a beautiful budgie who was so tame and talked all the time (he said over 130 diffrent words). I used to smoke, he keeled over one day and the vet said it was a stroke, probably caused by teh fact that he was constanting sitting on my shoulder or head when I was indoors (and smoking!). He died and Im convinced that my smoking was the cause;

Smoking can cause anybody to get cancer. Dogs get cancer but has it ever been linked to a smoker who has been around them.. ???

You have posed a very - very good question to us.

From a handlers view point. Cigarette smoke can hurt a dogs ability to track... a dog can still track but not to the best of their abilities....So if it bothers the nose.. why not the lungs too?

GOOD POST & GOOD LUCK

I note that you received a few nasty answers. I am a smoker and I NEVER smoke when someone requests me to not smoke in their home, car, office etc. I am the first one to disuade youngsters from starting the filthy habit!!!!!!!! There is nothing I regret more in my life that started smoking!!!!!!!!! And to think it started as a joke, not knowing at the time that i have that "something" in me that is totally ADDICTIVE to nicotine!!! We all have the "gene" for lack of a better word in us regarding addictions to for example nicotine, alochol etc. Yes it is NOT good to smoke in the same room as your animal or anyone else for that matter. My late wonderful cat, Sir Ludwig, used to get extremely upset when is moked near him and started flicking his tail. I would then merely say sorry Sir and move away. Silly little me but I do have RESPECTA FOR OTHERS REGARDING THEIR ANTI-SMOKE VIEWS. Give your cat or dog cancer?? Sweetie, people get cancer regardless. Smoking is merely a contributory factor!!!!!!!!! You can get lung cancer living in the Antartic where there is NO polution!!!!!!!!

I think the chances of dying before they can get the cancer is higher then getting it. From the smoke.
