Human beings are engineered to push boundaries. If you tell a human that something cannot be done they will find a way. This has taken us to the depths of the seas and into outer space.
In the story god created humans but he had to be sure that they could survive outside of the garden so he put a test to them. He said. There is something that you must not do. It's out there in the open and very easy for you to do, just don't do it. They passed the test with flying colors and he could kick them out of the nest so to speak so life could go on.

They were fouled or actually Eve was fouled by the snake that convinced her to eat the apple, and then Eve convinced Adam to eat too. They were told the apple would let them see things God did not want them to see and grant them intelligence. So they ate it.

Because they believed Satan's lie that by eating the fruit from the tree of knowledge, they would then know everything that God knew.

Satan is Corrupting mankind to this day with his lies, and mankind are falling blindly into all his traps, yes he has many traps set up in this world, the same lie he told eve is still believed today by many people though variations , they do in some form resemble the lie that Eve was told, Although Eve was thoroughly deceived, Adam was around much longer and had been taught more by God, but both of them knew and understood what would happen if they did eat from the tree that God wanted them to keep from eatimg from, it was not a hard request that God made to them, for they were able to eat freely from all the trees in the Garden but only from one tree they were not to eat from as God told them in the day yo eat from it you wil in that day die note in Genesis3: second part of verse2 and onwards says:"So the serpent said to the Woman, is it really so that God said you must not eat from every tree of the garden? at this the woman said to the serpent:"Of the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat. But as for eating of the tree that is in the middle of the Garden you must not eat from it, no you must not touch it that you do not die." At this the serpent said to the woman:"You positively will not die." For God knows that in the very day of your eating from it your eyes are bound to be opened, and you are bound to be like God, knowing good and bad." Consequently the woman saw that the tree was good for food and that it was something to be longed for to the eyes, yes it was desirable to look upon. So she began taking of its fruit and eating it, Eve knew and understood what God had said to Adam and Eve and why they were not to eat from that tree, Eve disobeyed God and ate. Why? Eve believed Satan. She selfishly thought that she would benefit by disobeying God,. She reasoned that no longer would she or Adam need to answer to God. No Longer would they need to submit to his Laws. They could decide for themselves what is good and what is evil and act accordingly, a claim to complete moral independence.... The first sin was an attack on God's sovreignty. That is, it was an attack on God's right to be man's absolute ruler or superior.
So by eating the forbiden fruit, Adam and Eve withdrew themselves from under God's rulership. They went out on their own, doing what was good or bad according to their decisions. So the important issue or question raised was :" Does God have the right to be the absolute ruler of humankind? Is he the one to decide what is good orbad for humans? Is he the one to say what is right conduct and what is not? Or can man do a better Job of governing himself? Whose way of ruing is best? Can humans, under the invisible direction of Satan, rule successfully without God's direction? Or is God's guidance needed in order to set up a righteous government that will bring lasting peace to the earth? All such questions were raised in this attack on God's sovreighnty, on his right to be the only and absolute ruler of humankind.
Of course as soon as the rebellion happened God could have destroyed the three rebells. there was no question that he ws stronger than Satan or Adam and Eve. But destroying them would not have settled matters in the best way. For example, it would not have answered the question of wether humans could successfully rule themselves without help from God. So he allowed time to settle the important issue that was raised.

Because if you tell someone they're not allowed to do something, it only makes it want it more. Not to mention, Satan helped to pressure them into it. Myself, I think it was a setup. God knew what was going to happen, but he put the tree there anyway. Ah well.

They had no concept of dishonesty, so when the devil implied that God couldn't be trusted, at least Eve took the bait.
