Former Prosecutor, Ex-Trooper Charged With Running NYC Brothel

NEW YORK — A former federal prosecutor, a law school student and a former New Jersey state trooper were charged Wednesday with operating a New York City brothel that laundered its profits through fake companies.

The charges against the former prosecutor, Paul Bergrin of Marlboro, N.J., stem from his taking over NY Confidential, a lower Manhattan escort service that one of his clients ran until his arrest in January 2005, prosecutors said.

District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said Bergrin, 51, and co-defendants James Cortopassi, 27, of Marlboro, and Hiram Ortiz, 41, of Newark, N.J., took in $1.2 million in prostitution proceeds in the first six months that they ran the service.

The proceeds, which included more than $800,000 in credit card charges, were laundered through two shell companies....

Maybe they're not even guilty! Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty. Narrow minded people like this question asker are one of the many things wrong with America. If they are guilty, and after they are found guilty, then we should talk about jail time. Until then, they are innocent.

Read the constitution buddy!

First of all, how can you pass judgement on people you don't even know. What happened to innocent until proven guilty? In case you're wondering, I'm close to one of the defendant's. If you've ever worked in a law firm, I'm a second-year law student (hint), then you know that most of the time interns/clerks are required to perform tasks in which they are not given 100% of the information. I'm not saying that these individuals are completely innocent but I don't believe that they are totally guilty. I don't think they'll get real jail time, but the damage is already done. Reputation is everything in the law community.

I would have to agree with you. More than likely the DA guy will represent himself and get the charges dropped or reduced, paying a fine. The other two will say they were just workers and get a slap on the wrists too. Many people still feel as though prostitution is a victimless crime.
