When a cockatiel looks like it is yawning, it is feeling affectionate. The repeated wide opening of the beak is preparation for regurgitating food. Cockatiels feed their youngsters this way, and also their mates. If you encourage it by yawning back, sometimes you will see the throat working, getting ready....But with humans they don't usually go all the way to regurgitate.

Similar to a person's yawn. They open their beaks and their tongue usually protrudes a little bit. There is no sound.
