This is an annoying problem at school. I get at least 9 or 8 hours of sleep a day, yet I still can't stay awake.

yes, eating breakfast is very important. Another consideration is posture: sitting up straight helps you breathe and gets more oxygen to the brain. Take some slow deep breaths when you first sit down. Being interested and prepared for class will do wonders.

Are you overweight? People who are overweight (like myself) most of the times suffer from sleep apnea. The persons suffering from sleep apnea don't fall into a deep sleep because as soon as they do, they stop breathing and therefore their brain wakes them just enough so that they start breathing. This causes sleep deprivation even though the person may sleep 8-9 hours every night which in return will cause excessive sleepiness during the day. Now I have to say that people who are not overweight can also have sleep apnea. You may want to talk about this with your doctor.

If you find the class boring, I'll bet you would fall asleep if you slept 20 hours.
Talk with the teacher. Explain the problem. Ask permission to stand up in the back of the classroom.

You could try coffee if you haven't already but that tends to make people hyper and /or fidgety. I like to have a swallow or two of monster energy drink before I go to school, it does the trick and I don't get jittery.
