I wanted to know what exactly is the status of the Pope in different Christian sects. My limited knowledge tells me that to Catholics he is the head of the Roman Catholic Church and the seccessor of St. Peter but a more elaborate elucidation from catholics would be enlightening to me. As for the others, I want to know what role does the Pope play (if any) in your beliefs.
Thank you.

The office of pope was established by Christ, first given to St. Peter, and handed down to his successors, via apostolic succession, to this day.

The pope is the supreme earthly leader of the Church, answerable only to God.

Most Catholics accept his authority. Most other Christian groups don't.

But since Jesus gave him his power and authority, it doesn't matter what others think or do.

He is an appointed figure-head with importance to Catholics but not to other Christian sects. Pope Benedict acts like he didn't want to be elected. Mother Theresa & Pope John Paul passed away a few weeks apart, yet Mother Theresa was cannonized quite a while ago and Pope Benedict won't get off his laurels with Pope John Paul even though he said that he would speed up the process. What could be the problem with Pope John Paul, something that we don't know?
