(By "active" I'm trying to get around the "he's gay but he doesn't act on it" cop-out.)
Do you find that your church treats you poorly? Or did you find a congregation in a more tolerant area? Or do you just deal with whatever hatred that comes your way?
(I'm not gay, but my heart goes out to gays who are persecuted.)

serenaacw - I have to point out a touch of hypocrisy in your logic. Being gay is only "fornication" because your church won't allow two gays to get married. That's not a very fair aspersion to cast, then, is it?

ZCT, between you and me and the doorpost, I kind of agree with you, but I figure that gays have a sucky enough time as it is that they probably don't need the extra frustration of me telling them that they picked a crummy religion to follow. :)

I live in Holland. Here it's not even just possible, it's considered 'normal' by the majority. 86% of the people, even the religious people is in favor of gay marriage. I'm atheist, but I could almost say 'thank god for that'.
I honestly don't understand many christians on this website who post all that anti-gay nonsense. The difference between homosexuals and heterosexuals is not even an issue to me.
On this forum here, I've been called gay many times. Even if I'm not. The cute part is that people truly assume that calling a person a 'sexual preference' could even remotely be an insult.

All "out" gays are "actively" gay. Accourding to some "Christian" churches a gay person is only "actively" gay when they are actually having a homosexual relationship.
The truth is, if a person accepts they are gay, that is a form of being active. They accept who they are, who God made them to be and live with the knowledge.
Many gays/lesbians are indeed Christians. Being Christian is simply a belief that Jesus was their Lord and Savior. It doesn't mean they lead completely sinless lives. No one does that and no one can because we're merely human. We are imperfect beings.
Unfortunately many Christian congregations forget this and persecuit gays and lesbians, judging their lives and assuming it's their choice to be gay.
Trust me, I have never met a gay person who actively Chose to be hated, to be bullied, to be harassed, hated, beaten and even murdered.
A true Christian loves all souls as we are all Gods children.
Now as far as "hating the sin." That's a completely other subject that I will not now get into.

It is with the right church and the right congregation. For example, the Episcopal church didn't seem to have much trouble with that gay priest until he was being made bishop. Heck, there's a church in the Dallas area called the Cathedral of Hope which has a pink marble triangular altar.

Of course you can be openly gay and Christian. The relationship between sex and religion is baffling,. Sexual behaviors considered sinful by many churches, masturbation, fornication, adultery, and homosexual acts don't stop someone from being loved by god. If no one is harmed I don;t think there is sin, if two people are openly expressing love then there may even be grace. Of the four sexual sins I listed only adultery would always be wrong, someone is always hurt. In the Catholic church you can be gay but not sexually active, ironic with up to a third of all priests being gay.

I know some denominations, like Episcopilans, have gay bishops and the like. But according to the Bible,it's wrong on two levels-homosexual acts are wrong in God's eyes, and it's also fornication.
Christians who are practicing gays shouldn't be persecuted, but if they make a commitment as a Christian they need to be held accountable for sin, just the same as a Christian who commits heterosexual sin like adultery and fornication.

Jesus died to forgive the sins of EVERYbody. The Bible teaches (in so many words) that homosexuality is wrong. A person can be a Christian and be gay but that person is openly, or not so openly, disobeying what God has said. Jesus didn't tell people not to curse, not to take the name of God in vane, but then when something went wrong He started using a bunch of foul language. All people fall into sin and need forgiveness. But that doesn't mean we have a license to sin and can keep it up. We need to turn from our sin. Ask for forgiveness and ask God for help, and try our best to abandon that sin. Homosexuality is wrong. God can, and may well forgive. But we have to do our part too and follow as He directs. That means turning from, quiting, abandoning the sin. If I say I'm sorry for something. If I admit guilt but continue doing what I say I'm sorry about. How sorry am I? Not very much. That line of reasoning fits the situation you are talking about.

I would have to say no.
The Bible is quite clear on the subject:
Lev.18:22
Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.
Lev.20:13
If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.
Rom.1:26-27
For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature. And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
Any 'practicing' homosexual who claims to be a Christian is misguided, because they are following a religion that openly and deliberately attacks them for who they are. That's kind of like staying with an alcoholic husband that beats you up every night. It's not a good idea.

the position precisely does God command gay human beings to be celibate? Is that some new anti-gay verse extra to the Bible? previously you condemn gay Christians who're married to someone of an same sex, you would do nicely to analyze what scripture reported about homosexuality previously the translators were given carry of it. you're shocked. check out those links:

Obviously in the Episcopalian church it is. They elect gay bishops every now and then.

No. Homosexuality is a temptation, and to give one's self over to temptatoin by being active (and/or even be proud of the temptation) is against what it means to be a Christian.
