I just got my computer reformatted with a new graphics card.
"SAMTRON 76E/77E on Radeon X1600 series"

I have anti virus programs and no popups.
I am not running any other programs that may cause this as it happens when all programs (apart from startup programs) are closed.

All my drivers are updated.

What is causing this spike from 4% cpu usage to 100% cpu usage ?

I never noted it, but after looking at your question I looked at it, and as I refresh my browser I get the same 100 spike in the cpu usage and I am sure my computer is working normally.

It's pretty normal that every 10 or 20 secs, the AV uses the processor because as it's monitoring the hard drive, there are pages that are constantly being processed.

However, if you are unable to move the mouse or suffer from freeze, then it's probably the graphics card - make sure that you've installed an updated driver. Also, go to your display settings from Control Panel, Click Advanced, Go to Hardware, if write combing feature is enabled, disable it and restart your computer. Else, enable it and restart your computer.

Good luck. Also, don't wrorry about the spike - if the spike is short and does not last long without freezing the Operating System, it's ok.

:)

Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and check the task manager...click the tab that says Processes and scroll down the list under CPU ...I think System Idle Process is normal the way it is...hope this was helpful..
