For the past week I've been having problems with my eyes (not my vision, but the eyes themselves).

For some reason, (maybe because of the dry winter season) my eyes have been red a lot, my eyelids have been dry, and there is a CONSTANT stickiness lining the outside of my left UPPER eyelid.

I have NO idea what this stickiness is... not sure if it's tears, discharge, or lymph. It feels more like lymph... since it has the same sticky feeling -- but I'm not sure.

It's really annoying because it feels like I'm sweating out of my eyelid or something. And it's not like the tears/discharge are coming out of my eye and going up onto my eyelid... more of as if it's coming through the skin.

Has anyone else had this? Or do you guys have any recommendations in terms of treatment? HELP!!

Pinkeye (also called conjunctivitis) is redness and swelling of the conjunctiva, the mucous membrane that lines the eyelid and eye surface. The lining of the eye is usually clear. If irritation or infection occurs, the lining becomes red and swollen. See illustrations of a normal eye and one with conjunctivitis.

Pinkeye is very common. It usually is not serious and goes away in 7 to 10 days without medical treatment.

Common symptoms of pinkeye are:

Eye redness (hyperemia).
Swollen, red eyelids.
More tearing than usual.
Feeling as if something is in the eye (foreign-body sensation or keratoconjunctivitis).
An itching or burning feeling.
Mild sensitivity to light (photophobia).
Drainage from the eye.
Most cases of pinkeye are caused by:

Infections caused by viruses or bacteria.
Dry eyes from lack of tears or exposure to wind and sun.
Chemicals, fumes, or smoke (chemical conjunctivitis).
Allergies.
Viral and bacterial pinkeye are contagious and spread very easily. Since most pinkeye is caused by viruses for which there is usually no medical treatment, preventing its spread is important. Poor hand-washing is the main cause of the spread of pinkeye. Sharing an object, such as a washcloth or towel, with a person who has pinkeye can spread the infection. For tips on how to prevent the spread of pinkeye, see the Prevention section of this topic.

People with infectious pinkeye should not attend school or go to work until symptoms improve.

It can be from dryness as you suggest. Or allergies. Also if the tear ductsbecomes clogged, this can also cause a discharge. Any discharge when it thickens becomes sticky. Another possibility is that something has irritated the eyes, something foreign got into them, anything from makeup, something that was on your hand when you rubbed your eyes. As long as you don't have pain when you look at light, its not likely an emergency. Flushing the eye with VIsine or plain saline (use a new bottle to avoid contamination) that is meant for the eyes will improve it. If flushing it doesn't improve it, you probably need to see a dr.

You should never mess around with eyes and any inflammations you may have.

Personally, I wouldn't go to a pharmacy and buy some drops off the shelf. How do you know these are going to be good for you?

I had a similar infection about a year ago, and bought over the counter drops. Within 2 days, my eye was actually weeping pus and was starting to get kind of scabby on the side of it.

I'm not saying it was the drops that did it. It most likely wasn't.

BUT!!! If I had gone to the doctor to start with, it would never have gotten that bad.

Eyes are something NOT to be messed with.

I agree that it sounds like an eye infection. You must really be suffering if it's been going on for a week. See a doctor to get appropriate treatment. And wash your hands often -- these infections can be very contagious. I hope you feel better soon!

And I have also heard that the warm, wet cloth will help too.

You have conjunctivitis and it is contagious-- to other people-- you need to get an antibiotic drop from a doctor-- ER's will treat you for this. Your eyes are really bad infected by the way you describe the discharge-- if possible tonite- have someone drive you to the er so they can give you the drops.

If you wear contact lenses- throw out the ones you have been wearing they are infected and buy a new lens case- good luck to you -- please see a doc asap- I never heard of a case as bad as yours you must have had this for at least 2-3 weeks?

There's a visine for that. J/K

I have a similar problem with a certain type of mold. It causes my eyes to get unbearably itchy, teary and pretty much how you describe it. Anyway, It is usually associated with someones old furniture that has that yellow foam crap in it. I seem to have an allergy to it. It goes away within minutes if I get into fresh air.

I went to the doctor for this as I used to sleep on a bed made of this type of material. They told me it was pink eye and gave me every drug in the cabinet for it with no effect. I think it's an allergy myself which has probably recently developed.

you have an eye infection or conjunctivitis..you need to call your MD. and get a presciption..some Drs. will do it over the phone if you have clasic symptoms. It is extremely contagious. you need to wash your eye with the corner of a wet warm washcloth..changing corners of cloth each time you wash..launder cloth after 4th use..wash your hands frequently. keep hands away from your eyes. If you use contacts, remove them and do not use until eye is better, then get new ones, you only have 2 very sensitive eyes..take care of them..
