Cal gave a decent answer unless you want to do as the wise-cracks advise and shave the dog.
Assuming the dog is in decent health and not losing hair in an abnormal manner because of poor health, you cannot stop shedding, you can only try to manage it to prevent it from being a problem. Regular brushing is one of the best answers. It not only gets rid of loose hair before it falls all over everything, it strengthens the bond between you and the dog. It also improves the dogs general appearance.
Any pet store, feed store, or Wal-Mart will carry all types of shedding combs and brushes. The best one for you will be determined by the dog's breed and coat type.
Good luck.

Depending on the dog. Some dogs shed more than others. Some dogs have a "second" coat which adds to the shedding. Be sure to brush or even Vacuum him often. Seasonal shedding is quite common. A bath every other week to once a month is always a great idea. however if he is overly shedding, time to check out the food. Be sure your dog is getting a balanced diet. And I don't mean the same old dog food every day. Dogs of different breed require different levels of proteins and carbs.

Impossible we shed hair, dogs (except poodles) do too and birds moult out their feathers! Your only option is to control the mess.
Proper diet, regular combing and the odd bath will help to remove/conrtol excess fur and limit the mess factor but frankly when a dog is moulting it continually losses the hair and you could comb it a minute later and still get loose fur. Some breeds are worse than others either because they have a thick furry undercoat to waterproof them or because they moult slowly thereby prolonging the mess.
Apart from the above I can only suggest regular combing and regular exercise.

if your dog is losing excessive hair you need to see your vet. there could be a medical reason for the hair loss. if not your vet can tell you what supplements or food changes might be in order to help with the problem. if you are just looking for a way to help cut down on loose hair from your dog, then you need to take them to a groomer and keep the dog brushed on a regular basis. i've found the furminator if done properly with the shampoo and the correct brush works wonderfully for about 3 months. the normal cost of this if done professionally is around $50, and i'd gladly pay someone else to do this every three month than myself. but inbetween groomings you are the responsible one for keeping the dog combed out.

Don't shave him, that's the worst thing you can do. The hydrobath that they have at grooming salons is great for getting out dead hair. Good quality food and a brush everyday with a rubber de-shedding brush works wonders. You can even just pat him with a rubber glove on. Rubber attracts the hair.

dogs need to shed their hair seasonally, brush him out and to minimize hair all over ... it's also a good bonding time for you and your dog. Some dogs are more prone to shedding ... if it's something new then speak to the vet it could be a problem

Like what everyone's saying, regular brushing will get rid of the underlaying coat. Giving them proper diet that has fish oil, omega fatty acids for their skin. When shampooing, use the ones with oatmeal/aloevera to help ease their skin.
good luck
