The Swami knew his end was nearing. All his actions during the last days were deliberate and significant. He said that smaller plants cannot grow under the shade of a big tree. On 4 July 1902, he meditated from 8 to 11 in the morning, rather unusually. In the afternoon, he went out for a walk with Swami Premananda and explained his plan to start a Vedic school. In the evening, he retired to hi room and spent an hour in meditation. Then he lay down quietly and after some time took two deep breaths and passed into eternal rest.

The long cherished wish of countless admirers and followers of Swami Vivekananda came true when the ancestral house of Swamiji, renovated and restored by Ramakrishna Mission, was inaugurated on September 26th 2004 by revered Swami Ranganathanandaji Maharaj, the President of Ramakrishna Order. He declared open the house by way of offering flowers at the altar at Swamiji's birthplace. He later released a brochure and addressed the gathering. Swami Gahananandaji, Swami Atmasthanandaji, Swami Gitanandaji (revered Vice-Presidents of the Order), Swami Smarananandaji (the General Secretary), and Swami Prabhanandaji also spoke. Cultural programmes were organized both in the morning and evening. About 500 monks and nearly a lakh devotees visited this sacred place to pay their reverential homage to Swamiji. Doordarshan telecast the programme live on its Calcutta Channel.
The large house in which Swamiji was born had been built by his great grandfather Rammohan Dutta 300 years ago. Rammohan was an associate of an English solicitor and earned a lot of wealth through his profession. The house was located in Simla Palli, a locality in north Calcutta. During Swamiji's time the house was surrounded by a garden and beyond that there was a large open space. But in later years, owing to the city's growth and the overcrowding of buildings, the approach road to the house got narrowed into a lane, now known as Gour Mohan Mukherjee Street.

Swamiji's house, originally, was a large structure. A massive doorway opened to the street outside. On one side of the doorway there was a small room meant for the durwan or gatekeeper.

As you entered the premises by the doorway, you would see the spacious courtyard, at a corner of which there was a stable for horses. The courtyard was bordered on two sides by the main building which had two parts. To the right was a single-storied structure having rooms for men-folk. In front of these rooms was a long veranda where feasts were laid out for guests on special occasions. Facing the doorway and across the courtyard, adjoining the men's rooms, rose the ladies' apartment, two storeys in height. The ground floor of this was used as kitchen and dining hall. Above this were the dwelling chambers. From the latticed enclosure here the purdah ladies could watch the grand Pujas and other religious ceremonies held in the courtyard. The roof of this building served as the place where the ladies met, talked, and moved freely. It was in a small temporary shed on this roof that the future Swami Vivekananda was born. It may be mentioned here that, as in some other religious traditions, in Hindu religious tradition also 'accouchement' or giving birth used to be regarded as a form of social defilement, and so it was arranged either in an outhouse or a shed on the roof. This is the reason why Swamiji's actual birthplace happened to be on the roof of his house.

The untimely death of Naren's father brought out the weak links in family relationships. Hardly had the days of mourning been over when some of the relatives put forth claims to the ownership of the property. The dispute was taken to the court and the legal battle dragged on. After the high court case was settled, the whole property was divided into ten parts. A portion of the house was demolished to make a common passage for the occupants of the building. After the time of Swami Vivekananda and his mother, his two younger brothers Mahendranath Dutta and Bhupendranath Dutta continued to live in a part of the building till the end of their lives.
