Sorry, but your dad wins this one.

WA state law requires children under 6 to be in the back seat if the car has front seat airbags and it is pratcical to do so.

That's a nationwide law. Kids 12 & under need to be in the backseat for safety. Airbags can kill them. There used to be a 100 pound law added onto that but since the recent child booster seat changes, it's no longer and added issue.

There was an old commercial for a Chevrolet minivan with BigBird from Sesame Street in it. He'd say "Kids under 12 in the backseat!" I don't recall the minivan model as it's no longer made by Chevy now.
