We have recently relocated to Washington, from Texas. In Texas, she would have one hour per day of work plus reading on the weekends. I complained to her teacher but was told it is the standard. In Washington she can do 1 week worth of homework in one hour. Is there a middle ground somewhere, or were they severely overworking her in Texas as I suspected?

My sister, a teacher in CA, says that a child should have 10 minutes worth of homework per grade level. So a 3rd grader should 30-40 min a night. I know my daughter (a 3rd grader) can do hers in 20-30 minutes easy, + the 20 minutes of reading at bedtime. But I'm sure it's different everywhere.

As far as TX and overworking her...here's my opinion on that. I love TX and would move there in a heartbeat, but...when I was in 4th grade my parents moved us from CA to TX. While I was a great student in CA, TX seemed to be harder on me and my grades slipped dramatically. I never really caught up, even after moving back to CA in 8th grade. Maybe it was the move in general, I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised if they expected more of their students in TX. But what the heck do I know?!?!

I would think 20-30 minutes/night would be about right. If the school scores well on the standardized tests, then I would not worry about the amt of homework. Is your daughter learning new things in class and writing and spelling and such? Then I wouldn't worry about it. I will say that I've lived in 3 different states the last 15 years and in all of them from 3rd grade on the kids had excessive homework, many taking 4 hrs each night. Dr. Dobson says that schools have the kids for 8 hrs and should be able to teach them in that amt of time w/o sending home hours of homework... If you feel that your child isn't getting enough schoolwork, you can always supplement at home.

The general rule is that they should have 10 minutes of work per year of school. So a third grader should have about 30-40 minutes worth of work every night.

Math and spellin homework Monday through Thursday.

No homework on Friday through Sunday unless there is some special take home project.

3rd graders have to have homework. I can't imagine a school not having homework for them. They need it because they are learning new math skills and they need to pratice for the weekly spelling tests. My son is in 3rd grade and has about an hour each night. He also has to read 20 minutes a night. He's in the Gifted class so he's always doing something extra for extra credit.

On top of that I have him do pratice math sheets because he's having a hard time with that. If he doesn't do the work sheets we work with flash cards.

These days an hour of homework for a third grader is pretty normal.

My daughter is in grade 3 in a private catholic school. She gets at a minimun of 1 1/2 to 2 hours of homework per night. Lots of that time does include studying for tests. On top of that we also have monthly book reports, daily reading minutes, and many other "daily" assignments. It seems that as time goes on, homework gets more and more pressuring. I definately don't remember having such a heavy workload. Also something I have learned this year at her open house, was that she has a "lot" of homework because she doesn't apply her "freetime" to the proper areas. She could be doing her homework, but prefers to socialize! So keep that in mind too!

Thats alot of homework for such a young child. Instead of expecting the teachers to give her structured homework, you can be teaching her things all the time as you interact with her. Schools usually have spelling books too where a chlid brings home about 10 words they need to learn by the end of the week. Learning is also fun, you could get her some activity maths books or quiz books to keep her stimulated, or get her to learn an instrument.

1 hour a night is standard. A whole weeks worth of homework in one hour is way too little. The point of homework is to reinforce what they learned that day..I do not see how that can be done with so little homework unless the teacher is teaching next to nothing.

The rule of thumb is ten minutes per grade: so, third grade, thirty minutes per night. This may or may not include reading nightly. Personally, I believe the reading should not be included in the "ten minutes per grade".

Fifteen minutes normally, but a half hour over a weekend is okay. You do not want them burned out or missing out on their childhood times.

All work makes a child a crying tearful mess.

I taught 3rd grade for 9 yrs in Georgia. I gave Spelling and Reading homework every night. I would say that would be about an hour each night.
