i got alot of people telling me that my son wouldn't remember his first birthday so don't go overboard. my thoughts were there are always photos. and he will have a good time that day even if he doesn't remember later.
for my son's first birthday, we had a safari. i made a jungle in my back yard. and it didn't cost a fortune, but it was a lot of work. we made the trees with cardboard boxes, wire hangers, duct tape, and paint. for the vines, i dyed sheets, cut them into strips, and twisted them together. stuffed toys for the animals were purchased at thrift stores, yard sales, dollar stores, a few from personal collection. i got pith hats and plastic binoculars for all the guests. it was super fun and a learning experience. the kids had a blast. i took my son to the zoo the day before so that he could see all real animals that would be in our jungle.
this year we had a native american drum circle. we made tons of different types of drums and shakers out of cans, paper cups, paper towel rolls, etc, etc. had a couple of teepees. again, dying and painting sheets. homemade headdresses for the kids. another huge success.
neither party cost me a fortune. the key is imagination and knowing how to shop.
another fun idea i have had (not used yet) is a bathtime theme. have all the kids come wearing their bathrobes and slippers. paint a bathroom scene on some boxes. for party favors you could give out bubbles, bath crayons, etc.

We just did this for my neice's baby 1st Birthday. She hired a reputable clown that made balloon animals wparents on floor w/the baby's. It turned out cute b/c some of the babys were not walking yet and were amused to interact in a circle with other babys & parents. Then they played a game rolling a ball to susies parents then every one says susies got the ball. Then they roll to johnnys parents. Kids did seem to be amused.

kept it simple, he's only turning 1 and he wont remember it. Buy or make a nice cake, put him in a really cute outfit for pictures, things like that. If you want to decorate it do a kids theme table cloth and plates and invite family and close family friends, of if he does playdates that might be something to consider so he has someone to play with. just kept it simple and fun. He's only turning 1 and he wont remember it anyways, so sweet and simple is the way to go.

1) ballons!!!!!!!!!!! Toddlers LOVE balloons
2) Invite his little friends (and their parents), not a lot, but someone he can play with so he'll understand that this is his special day.
3) For food, make milkshakes and have fruit salad and for main course- something they all can chew (maybe spaghetti, or pizza?? Anyway, you can cut it up if it IS hard to chew)
4) For games, play pinata, and play with new toys.
5) Relax, the boy is too small to understand, and he'll have fun anyhow wether you planned it good or not, because he is surrounded by people who love him and care about him.

Keep it simple he won't remember it. What I did was made an individual cake of my son's favorite character (pooh) and then made a cake for the family. He had fun making a mess of the cake while the family enjoyed eating a small slice from the other one.
