herring gulls can live up to 31 years, that one probably told all the others how much it sucked flying against the wind both ways to school though. ;)
as for where they go to die, i think it's just that when you have an animal that lives close to water all the time, when it does die, it has a good chance of landing in the water and the fish take care of it, or if it's along the shoreline, crabs and such. i know they like to get hit by cars on U.S. 1 through my town.....
