Dodge Magnum--- should be able to fit a rack on top, or store your stick inside, enough room to change in or behind. even an all wheel drive model if you need to park in the dirt. This is with the understanding that you want "new" and not a truck or a van. I still like the "Town Squire" station wagons of the 1960's and 70's. You could pack in a couple boards and a couple Bud's and head off. Also there interior was indestructible for those trips to Del Taco after words.

Honda Element
-Rubber floor mats - interior can be lightly hosed out
-Fold flat seats for napping or whatever
-AWD
-roof rack
-Unique styling
-decent mpg
-reliable
-retain value well
-door design allows wide loading area
A Subaru Baja is also suitably goofy enough for your stereotypical surfer. Basically a station wagon with the rear turned into a truck bed.
