I had 7 cavities filled. Immediately after I had tooth pain in two areas. That was 5 months ago and the pain is still there and I think its getting worse. It hurts every time I brush my teeth (the cold water hurts it, icecream really hurts to eat, even cool water hurts.) I have been waiting for the new year so I can get benefits again. There are other dentists in the office. Should I ask them to re-ex-ray and see what they did wrong.? Should I ask them to fix it without having to pay them/or bill my insurance?. I want it fixed but I don't want to run into them just creating more problems. Should I just cut my losses and go to another dental office all together? Anybody else out there who has had a similar problem?

I did forget to mention that I did tell an assistant there about the pain and she said that it sometimes takes 2 months for the pain to go away, that's why I waited so long.

Couple things to mention. First it depends on how the cavities were filled. Was it a composite (tooth colored filler) or an amalgam (silver) filling?
Most likely I'm guessing its composite, cause amalgam is hardly ever used anymore. Depending on the size of the actual cavity you may experience some sensitivity. Composite fillings do not always insulate the root area sufficently. This is common especially if it was a large area that was filled.
If your in doubt, call your dentist and talk to him. He may suggest you use a toothpaste that will help with sensitivity.

Well, i would say go back to them for a fix. If they messed up they need to correct it, however, why did you not report the pain to them right away? The 5 month time span might cause you some grief. If you do not feel confident in this dentist then i would suggest going to a second dentist and cut your losses. If you think you can be firm enough and stand your ground, no reason you can not try to get this fixed with no cost at original place... just be prepared to defend your reasons for waiting so long to complain. Hopefully this is a small problem/over-site that can be fixed fast and politely. Give them a chance if you think you can be firm. You are your best advocate, use your voice and i would HIGHLY recommend reporting any problems right away in the future. Even if they blow if off, you will have proof to back you up. Best of luck!

Yes. The dentist is ethically obligated to fix whatever he didn't do right. The dentist will bill your insurance, but you have to ask yourself if you really like this particular dentist. If he takes care of the problem, he is just doing the best he can, and some cases can baffle even House (TV doctor show). On the other hand, if you don't get the feeling you are treated according to medical ethics and standards, you can take some small pleasure in making the dentist forward your dental records to a new dentist. Good luck. Tooth pain sucks, it really does.

I would go to another dentist. I had the same thing happen to me. Instead of going back to my same dentist, I chose to go to another one that although it was a bit more expensive, the service and quality of the service was a hundred times better. It could be that the cavity that they filled was deeper than they thought and should have had a root canal done on it instead of just filling the cavity. In that case, the teeth that are hurting could be infected and that is why they are causing so much pain. I know how uncomfortable that is and when I finally got it fixed and had the root canal done, I was so much more comfortable- no more pain at all. Anyways, hope you get it fixed and out of pain!

Yes!!!! And I felt the same way and was in the same situation with my insurance, only mine was a root canal. I was pregnant when the problem first flared up. They wont do dental work on pregnants.. so I suffered for three months. Then while sitn in that chair, feeling helpless and doomed, The dentist tells me, after put-tn me through torture, that she can only find 3 nerves, roots whatever. and that shes never seen anything like that ever. Fixes me up with a porcelain crown, which I paid for...The insurance would only pay for a small fraction of... The doctors disclaimer, "Well if It still bothers you later.... come back in...." Well... The dentist mentioned doesn't accept my new insurance. I don't want to call.I hate bad news. My new dentist, well I haven't mentioned this, I am afraid she'll want to pull. So when you get yours resolved make a note of it.

Sounds like you may have an abscess coming on. You do need to go back. It isn't that he messed up per say but, that one cavity may have been really deep and he had to put what they call "LIFE" over it. If that didn't take, you will have to get a root canal. I had one this past Monday and it wasn't so bad. My pain is gone. Go with your gut though, if you feel it is their fault then you just need to go to another dentist. Ask around. The best advertisement is word of mouth and if you have friends that love their dentists, go to them. You might like them too. Hope you get it taken care of.

I suggest trying to see a doctor about the pains. If he has medication or a remedy of some sort to eliminate it, you can try that, but be sure to tell him you got 7 cavities fille 5 months ago, and you still have the pains. You can also try asking your dentist about the pains and if he can fix it free of charge, given that the cause is his error. Good luck, and, I know, tooth pains suck!

You should return to the dentist that put the fillings in. I had this happen to me. I got a tooth fixed and I still had pain after the tooth was supposedly fixed. I returned to my dentist and he fixed the problem for no charge.

Dentists aren't perfect…they have a long work day and everyone makes mistakes

but I would call them up, tell them the problem, and they'll tell you the best course of action…whether it be come in for an appointment, or wait it out...

Also, what your describing is just sensitive gums…
use warmer water, special toothpaste, and eat cold food slowly

Definitely go back to your dentist and tell him/her your problems. The filling is sitting on an exposed nerve in your tooth and should be redone. This is not something the dentist did wrong and would have gladly corrected it if you would have said something.
Please always tell your dentist or doctor of any problems we are not mind readers.
