ya know it's so rare in life one gets a chance to actually relive a past glory, and rarer yet to triumph the 2nd time even moreso than the first time! ali's victory over foreman recalled his victory over liston in so many ways...foreman's idol was liston, believe he was liston's sparring partner at one point, both men were the most feared heavyweight champions of their respective days, both were considered unbeatable, both were expected to rule as long as they wanted, and both had the distinct misfortune of coming across a fast talkin' louisville fighter(who stalked each of them, mercilessly, in the days before the fight), at the peak of their powers, who they were expected to easily defeat(massacre, in fact)....and both were, respectively, out psyched, out fought, out punched, out hustled, and finally knocked out. and the fact that this happened almost exactly ten years apart(at almost the same point in the respective fights - which made these two fights perfect bookends in the legacy of muhammad ali's career! i cannot think of any other fights that were so perfectly executed, physically, mentally, psychologically, etc, to the point of being so one-sided in hindsight, where one man was so certain to lose, yet confounded the boxing so-called experts and so thoroughly dominated the other fighter! muhammad ali - the greatest of all time, in the two greatest performances of all time!!!
p.s. ali had soooo many remarkable, classic, and perfect performances(vs frazier2&3; vs norton2; vs spinks2; [just saw his 2nd fight vs bugner, what a great perf!!]. however, i just have to include ali's victory over cleveland "big cat" wiliams in the honorable mention category which, at the time, was the high watermark fulfillment of the promise he showed in the liston fights....until foreman came along, of course, and stands out as perhaps his single most dominant performance - before even the ali mystique of the 70's(when he became a living legend)! what an awesome fight, what an awesome fighter!!!

as far as performances go, ali in his first fight against unbeatable sonny liston and again against another unbeatable george foreman, he was flawless against zora folley, cleveland williams so ali had prob 4 of the greatest top 10 performances of alll time actually 5 with the thrilla in manilla round up the other 5 as holmes win over norton, louis over schmelin as mentioned, tunney over dempsey, jack johnson outclassing jeffries, tyson destroying m spinks in a minute.

Foreman's first fight against Joe Frazier. I still cringe win i watch how brutally Big George dismantled Joe. Joe had beaten Ali and no one expected Foreman to devastate Joe like that. Louis-Schmeling 2 is a good one too, as you stated. Holyfield-Tyson 1 also sticks in my mind. Evander fought the perfect fight in knocking Mike out. Great question.

Holyfield vs Tyson I comes to mind. Evander fought a perfect fight. Even though Tyson was not quite in his prime, his skills were not quite as erroded in that fight as they were in more recent fights. I give Evander A+ for that effort, especially since he knocked him out.
But I agree with the above who say Ali vs Foreman. Unbelievable fight and an unbelievable strategy.

Ali against Foreman
Ali against Liston the first time.
Ali against Folley. This was finally Folley's title shot but Ali used his speed and didn't let Folley hit him.
Ali against Frazier any of those fights

I would have to say that it has to be Ali's performance against Foreman, quite simply Big George was an animal at the time he was destroying the Heavyweight division and making some of Ali's foes (aka Frazier and Norton) look like they shouldnt of been in the same ring with him, enter the greatest of all time to give the biggest hitter of all time the biggest boxing lesson of his life, i think this was not only the best and most impressive display in a Heavyweight title fight but i believe it was probably the greatest achievement made by any boxer in a boxing ring, thats how highly i regard these two fighters, Number 1 and 2 Heavyweights of all time without doubt for me.
