I recently bought a Nikon D50, but lately I 've been running into some issues. The camera will lock itself up after capuring a photo. The only way to unlock it is to take the battery out. So why is the camera frozen? Is this a defect?

Obviously, this is a problem. I assume your battery is fully charged. Since you just bought the camera, I am sure it is under warranty, so investigate sending it for a warranty repair.

My wife has a D50 and we have not encountered this problem, so I can't offer any help. Look in your manual from pages 120 to 125 for troubleshooting. Check the LCD panel and see if there is an error message, as this will help you diagnose your problem if there is.

Otherwise, I will watch your answers and see what I can learn.

My D50 has been known to do this when the Battery is low. This also explains why it works for a sec once you take the battery out and put it back in. Try charging the battery. If this doesn't work go see your local Nikon dealer- it should be under warentee

Lock itself? You mean it cannot work?
If you just can't set the aperture by using the turn-plate, try to
half-press your shutter.
